Free Horizon Classrooms

Multi-Age Classrooms

Free Horizon Montessori features mixed age classrooms. Spending two to three years in the same classroom gives students the chance to have older students to model behavior for them, teach them skills, and mentor them. It also gives them the opportunity to do that modeling, teaching, and mentoring.

Our classrooms are arranged into:

  • Primary: Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten
  • Lower Elementary: 1st through 3rd Grades
  • Upper Elementary: 4th and 5th Grades
  • Middle School: 6th through 8th Grade

Staffing

Staffing for our classrooms is as follows:

  • Primary Classrooms typically have 27 students with a lead teacher and two assistant teachers.
  • Elementary Classrooms typically have 27 students with a lead teacher and one assistant teacher.
  • Our Middle School has around 75 students in total and has three co-lead teachers and two assistants.

Technology

Not all Montessori programs embrace modern technology, but here at Free Horizon, we believe that Montessori is about preparing children for the world in which they will live, and technology is absolutely a large part of that. We participate in Jefferson County’s TechforEd program, in which every student in grades five through twelve has one to one access to digital technology.

Our students are introduced to technology and principles of digital citizenship in our Library Tech Center in Kindergarten. As children get older, and their education progresses from mastering concrete skills and concepts to learning and understanding more abstract principles and ideas, they use Chromebooks more and more often in the classroom. They leave Free Horizon prepared to enter our highly technologically advanced world and thrive.
